Description

Slide Gate Valve for Silo & Hopper Discharge

The Slide Gate Valve is used to isolate the flow of powders, granules and other compatible bulk materials at silo outlets, hopper discharges and conveying equipment connections.

A flat gate plate moves across the discharge opening to start or stop material flow. Unlike valves that use a rotating disc, the sliding plate withdraws from the passage when opened, allowing material to pass into the equipment below.

The motor-driven configuration combines a steel-framed valve assembly with a guided sliding plate and external operating mechanism. A handwheel-equipped arrangement is also available for installations requiring local operation.

The valve can be matched to different discharge openings and equipment layouts, with the gate dimensions, drive arrangement and connection structure selected according to the installation.

The required opening dimensions, drive configuration and sealing details should be confirmed for each installation.

Sliding Gate Structure

The sliding plate moves along a guided path inside the valve assembly.

When the gate retracts, the material passage opens. During closing, the plate travels across the opening until the discharge path is isolated.

The surrounding frame supports the moving plate and maintains its alignment throughout the stroke. The guide arrangement is particularly important when the valve operates beneath stored material, where uneven loading or deposits around the sliding surfaces can increase operating resistance.

The gate movement also creates a different closing arrangement from a rotating-disc . Although both can serve dry bulk discharge systems, their internal movement, operating mechanisms and installation dimensions are not interchangeable.

Motor Drive and Handwheel Arrangement

The motor-driven configuration uses an external drive assembly to move the gate between its open and closed positions.

This arrangement is useful where the valve needs to operate as part of a production or material-handling sequence without requiring an operator to move the gate manually during every cycle.

A handwheel-equipped configuration provides local operating capability. Where powered and manual functions are combined, the correct engagement and operating procedure depend on the selected drive mechanism.

The motor and transmission must provide sufficient force for the gate to travel under the expected material conditions.

Important selection considerations include gate size, required stroke, frequency of operation and resistance caused by material around the closing path.

Motor power, travel speed and electrical connections are confirmed according to the specific drive assembly.

Gate Sealing and Material Contact

The sealing arrangement must accommodate the movement of the plate while limiting material escape around the closed gate.

Fine powders can enter narrow spaces around the sliding surfaces, while larger particles may become trapped near the gate edge during closing. These conditions affect the selection of the sealing components and the clearance around the moving plate.

The guide surfaces, gate edges and sealing contact should remain accessible for inspection according to the selected construction.

For applications handling abrasive materials, wear at these locations should be considered when specifying the valve.

The required degree of powder containment should be established before ordering. A standard slide gate should not be assumed to provide a particular dust-tight or pressure-tight sealing performance without confirmation.

Silo and Hopper Discharge Installation

A Slide Gate Valve is commonly positioned beneath a silo, hopper or storage bin to isolate the stored material from the equipment receiving it.

The downstream equipment may be a screw conveyor, feeder, chute or another bulk material handling machine.

The discharge opening, valve connection and receiving inlet should be considered together. A valve may have the correct opening size but still require a different mounting arrangement if the connection dimensions do not correspond.

The installation must also leave sufficient clearance for gate movement and the external drive mechanism.

Where the valve is mounted close to structural supports or conveying equipment, the complete operating envelope should be checked before installation.

Dry Bulk Material Applications

Slide gate valves are used at material transfer points where a defined shut-off position is required.

Typical applications include:

  • Cement and fly ash silo discharge

  • Mineral powder storage systems

  • Sand and compatible granular material handling

  • Hopper outlets in batching equipment

  • Screw conveyor and feeder connections

  • Dry material processing and transfer systems

The valve primarily provides material isolation.

Although changing the gate position can alter the available opening, a standard shut-off slide gate should not automatically be used as a precision dosing valve.

Applications requiring controlled feed rates should be evaluated together with the downstream feeder, weighing equipment or other material control system.

Installation Dimensions and Replacement Matching

A replacement slide gate must correspond with the existing material opening and mounting arrangement.

The clear opening is an important measurement, but it does not describe the complete valve.

Before selecting a new or replacement unit, confirm:

  • Clear opening width and length

  • Upper and lower connection dimensions

  • Mounting-hole positions

  • Overall installation height

  • Gate travel direction

  • Required gate stroke

  • Available drive and maintenance clearance

  • Material being handled

  • Existing motor or handwheel arrangement

For older installations, photographs and measured dimensions are particularly useful when the original model cannot be identified.

The valve frame should be mounted without forcing it to compensate for misaligned equipment connections. Distortion of the frame can interfere with the movement of the sliding plate.

Slide Gate Valve Selection and Supply

TONGJINJIN supplies Slide Gate Valves for dry bulk storage, conveying and discharge equipment.

Valve configurations can be matched according to the required opening dimensions, mounting connection, operating arrangement and material-handling application.

For replacement projects, existing valve dimensions and installation photographs can be used to identify the required configuration.

OEM and ODM supply is available for equipment manufacturers, batching plant suppliers, distributors and maintenance projects.

When requesting a quotation, provide the handled material, opening dimensions, operating method, installation drawings or photographs, and required quantity.

Frequently Asked Questions About Slide Gate Valves

Can a Slide Gate Valve close while material remains in the hopper?

It depends on the gate design, material condition and available drive force. Material resting above the plate can increase resistance during closing, particularly when particles become trapped around the gate edge. The expected closing condition should be considered during selection.

How much clearance is required when installing a Slide Gate Valve?

Allow enough space for the complete gate travel, external drive mechanism and maintenance access. The required clearance depends on the valve dimensions and direction of gate movement. These should be checked against the installation drawing before mounting.

Is a handwheel included with every Slide Gate Valve?

Not necessarily. Handwheel availability depends on the selected operating configuration. Confirm whether local manual operation is required when ordering the valve.

Can the valve be used to control the amount of powder entering a screw conveyor?

A standard slide gate is primarily intended for shut-off. Partial opening can affect material discharge, but accurate feed-rate control normally requires a suitable feeding or weighing arrangement. The gate should not be treated as a precision metering device without confirming the complete system design.

What should be checked if powder escapes around the closed sliding plate?

Check the sealing contact, plate alignment, material buildup around the gate entry and any wear affecting the closing surfaces. Also confirm that the gate completes its intended stroke. The sealing arrangement must match the required containment conditions.

Can an existing Slide Gate Valve be replaced without modifying the silo outlet?

It may be possible if the clear opening, mounting pattern, installation height and connection dimensions correspond with the existing equipment. The available space for the drive and gate movement must also match. Dimensional drawings or measured photographs are recommended before confirming a direct replacement.
